POONA BAY / POONA - QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA

POONA BAY is located approximately 90 minutes north of the Sunshine Coast. This peaceful little coastal village is only 7 klms from the World Heritage listed Fraser Island. The waterway separating Poona from Fraser Island is known as the great Sandy Straits and hugely popular with boating and fishing enthusiasts.
The earliest inhabitants of this small peninsula were of course aboriginal, evidenced by shell middens found in the area. Apparently the first white settler in Poona was Thomas Helenus Moffat who, in 1882, made the first selection application. Since that time, various inhabitants have used the country for farming, cattle grazing, timber harvesting and of course, fishing. 1967 marks the first in a series of land subdivisions. Until 1992, Poona had evolved as a small community, with a mixture of holiday homes, permanent residences and a caravan park. In 1993, Poona was poised for further subdivision. Various stages of development have taken place since then.
POONA today presents itself as a very pretty little coastal village entered by a tree lined 7 klm drive from Cooloola Coast Rd.. There are now approximately 250 houses, a delightful beachside caravan park, with several self-contained, air-conditioned holiday units and a small shop. The town also has an area set aside for some commercial development and now boasts fire brigade, a large community hall,( a licensed venue for all manner of community based activities). The most recent and welcome addition to the town's development is a general store and café, open 7 days a week and serving delicious hot food and excellent coffee.
POONA is populated by a fascinating variety of people, and a mixed age group. The nearest large town is Maryborough ,only 25 minutes drive away and an easy distance to commute for work or shopping facilities.
POONA is , because of it's relatively secluded setting, still largely untouched and offers a diverse range of residential opportunities from waterfront to more forested inland sites.
Come and visit POONA and see for yourself. It is well worth a visit.
